Calivirgin Extra Virgin Olive Oil - with Jalapeno Peppers
On our recent trip to Italy, we visited several wineries that also produced olive oil. This was a wonderful surprise because, while we love wine, we love olive oil even more. Especially fresh olive oil. The process of making olive oil in Italy is interesting, with the locals pouring out at harvest time to help produce the oil, donating their time for olive oil in return. The extra virgin olive oil in Italy was so delicious, we brought as much home as we could carry.
Back in the states, we’re happy to report that Italy is not the only country that produces outstanding olive oil. You can look much closer to home. I was contacted by Mike Coldani, owner of Coldani Olive Oil Ranch, LLC, located in Lodi, California. He told me he had several olive oils, including oils produced with jalapeno peppers. Absolutely straight up my alley, of course, but I’ve tasted olive oil infused with flavors before that weren’t quite up to par. After tasting their Calivirgin Extra Olive Oil, I’m happy to recommend their product.
I received two bottles in the mail: Extreme Heat Jalapeno and Jalapeno Garlic. Both are delicious. Smelling them right from the bottle will make your stomach rumble.
I used both olive oils for a lunch of grilled chicken with grilled onions, jalapeno peppers, potatoes and avocado and result was appetizing. I seasoned the chicken with only salt and pepper in order to allow the flavored olive oils to do their work. During grilling, I brushed the chicken breasts and vegetables with the Extreme Heat Jalapeno, then drizzled Jalapeno Garlic over the finished dish. The result? Delicious. The flavor enhanced the chicken and vegetables, and also brought a bit of heat, though not overwhelmingly so.
