Get Your Chili Pepper Gardens Ready!
We know you're excited. Who isn't excited and anxious for chili pepper gardening? With so many pepper choices and so many recipes begging and pleading for peppers, not to mention taste buds, this is the time of year to begin your garden planning. Winter is mostly behind us and Spring is on the way.
Now is the time to start sowing your pepper seeds for your garden. We at Chili Pepper Madness are in zone 5 and it is now about 10 weeks prior to the last frost. You need to start your seeds between 6-10 weeks prior to the last frost. Be sure to check your seed packets to determine the best time for that particular pepper.
We place 2-3 seeds into the peat pellets in a tray. There are plenty of ways to start seeds but we find this the easiest since the seed starting tray has a lid. The lid holds in the moisture and the heat to help the seeds germinate.
Peppers in particular need a lot of heat to germinate. They germinate slower than other vegetables so the environment they are in is important or they may not germinate. If you are behind schedule, soak the seeds for a day or two in plain water or salt water to speed the germination.
Today we started our poblano peppers. After placing the seed into the peat tray, we watered it until it grew to full height. You'll want to remove the netting from the top of the pellet and space the seeds out.
Cover the seeds with a very tiny amount of seed starting soil or peat. Watering from underneath will help the pellet grow and the seeds stay in place. Once the pellet has grown to
it's full height, dump the remaining water out of the tray.
Then placed the lid on the tray and place the tray in a warm location with indirect sunlight. Keep the soil slightly moist without overwatering for the weeks following. Poblanos take 10-25 days to emerge. Once they've sprouted, remove the cover from the tray and place the tray in full sunlight. Once the first two full sets of leaves have formed, transplant to a small pot.
