Kiwi Caipirinha

A twist on a popular Brazilian drink recipe made with kiwi, lime, sugar and Cachaça or rum - the Caipirinha. It's a tropical vacation in a glass.

Patty here again, wishing you a Happy Thirsty Thirteenth. Well, the weather is still nice and warm here but the temps are definitely on the verge of shifting with Fall coming soon. I wanted to select a refreshing drink with kiwi for an end of summer cocktail - the Kiwi Caipirinha. This cocktail will definitely make you remember all the wonderful and fun things you did over the summer. We had a great summer filled with fun vacations which included celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary.

But mostly as I sip on this Caipirinha I think of the first time I had one. Years ago we visited an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana for a friend’s destination wedding. Since it was for a wedding and it was all-inclusive, there was a lot of sampling of different cocktails. One night we asked the bartender to make us something different. Something that she specializes in. Being from Brazil, she decided to make us the Brazilian drink, the Caipirinha. We were instantly hooked and had plenty more after that first one.

Years later, I still enjoy making these as they are super refreshing and very simple to make. All you do is muddle the kiwi, lime and sugar in a glass and then add ice and the Cachaça or rum.

Kiwi Caipirinha - Recipe

The traditional Caipirinha uses double the lime and no kiwi but I love to experiment. Kiwis are so easy to muddle and the flavor instantly seeps right out. They have such a refreshing flavor and tell me, who doesn’t love kiwi? Doesn’t kiwi just take your mind to a tropical location? This is a wonderful pairing of the kiwi and lime. And don’t worry if you don’t have the traditional Brazilian liquor Cachaça. Rum substitutes just fine.

I hope you make this and enjoy it on a nice evening as the sun goes down and think of all the fun things you did over the summer. Or better yet, think about your favorite tropical vacation. You’ll feel like you are there, for a moment at least.
