Hands down, the best homemade salsa comes from a person who knows how to make it. It does take more practice than most people would figure in order to make a salsa with the right amount of flavor and kick, but if you would like to be one of those who have a secret salsa recipe, a great place to start is in your garden.

The number one secret to any delicious salsa is found in the freshness of the ingredients. And what could be fresher than plants that you have cultivated yourself? Consider starting a garden if you really want that salsa that your friends will go green (or red) with envy for.

For those who would like to plant ingredients for a basic salsa, the first and most important item is tomatoes. The great news is that tomatoes are hardy plants and are easy to grow in most parts of North America. Other plants that are great additions are onions, garlic, and cilantro.

Cilantro and other herbs take very little effort to grow and are extremely cost effective when produced in a home. Not to mention, your salsa will taste terrific! Another great ingredient for homemade salsa is peaches – obviously, a peach tree takes a while to cultivate, but if you already happen to have one your salsa will benefit from the flavor of fruit!

Lastly, chili peppers. We are partial to chili peppers, but chili peppers are very easy to grow in your home garden, and you’ll have a huge variety to choose from.
