Spicy Sloppy Joes with Smoked Gouda – Recipe

An easy recipe for sloppy joe mix sandwiches made from scratch with spicy habanero and jalapeno peppers, topped with melted smoked gouda cheese, served over toasted sour dough. A great game day meal or any quick weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 jalapenos peppers chopped
  • 1 habanero pepper chopped (if desired)
  • 2 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cayenne powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup tomato sauce – I used a frozen mix of pureed tomatoes and peppers from our garden but regular tomato sauce is good, too!
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons favorite hot sauce + more for serving
  • ½ cup shredded smoked gouda
  • Toasted sour dough slices for serving

Instructions

  • Heat a large pot to medium heat and add olive oil. Heat through. Add onion and peppers and cook about 6-7 minutes, or until softened.
  • Add garlic and cook another minute, stirring.
  • Add ground beef and cook about 8 minutes, stirring often, until the meat is cooked through.
  • Add brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne, paprika, salt and pepper, tomato sauce, vinegar and hot sauce. Stir and simmer about 20 minutes to bring the flavors together and thicken nicely.
  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Spoon the spiced sloppy joe mixture over toasted sour dough bread slices. Top with smoked gouda cheese.
  • Bake in the oven about 5-7 minutes, or until the cheeses are nicely melted.
  • Top with extra hot sauce and sour dough slices. Serve them up!
