Let's talk about how to make spicy edamame, shall we?
Spicy Edamame Ingredients & Suggested Substitutions
Here is a list of ingredients along with suggested substitutions to help you achieve the best spicy edamame. The full ingredients list with measurements is listed in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Frozen Edamame. Not shelled, usually found in the grocery store frozen section. You can use raw edamame if you wish, but will need a bit more cooking time. You can also use shelled edamame
- Sambal Oelek. My homemade sambal oelek recipe is perfect for this, but sriracha is an idea substitute.
- Sesame Oil. Perfect substitutes include chili crisp, chili oil, or Japanese rayu. Use a neutral oil if you need to.
- Fresh Garlic. Use garlic paste as a substitute.
- Fresh Ginger. Use teaspoon ginger paste as a substitute.
- Soy Sauce. Best subs are tamari or coconut aminos.
- Mirin. Use white vinegar as a substitute.
- Red Pepper Flakes. Optional, for extra spicy - use a splash of hot sauce as a substitute.
- Sea Salt. Any salt will work for this recipe.
How to Make Spicy Edamame
Cook the edamame. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the edamame and cook for 3–4 minutes, until tender and bright green. Drain well.
Alternatively, microwave them in a heat-safe bowl with a splash of water for 3 minutes, or steam until heated through.
Make the sauce. Heat the sesame oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger, and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until fragrant but not browned.

Combine. Pour the garlic-ginger oil into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the soy sauce, mirin, red pepper flakes (if using), and salt to taste.
Toss and serve. Add the warm edamame to the bowl and toss until evenly coated. Serve immediately while hot.
Boom! Done! Your spicy edamame is ready to serve.

Recipe Tips & Notes
- Easily customize your spicy edamame by mixing and matching some of my suggested substitutions. I personally love adding spicy chili crisp and sriracha or fiery hot sauce along with the primary ingredients for an extra flavor boost.
- Wondering how to eat edamame? Simply pop the pods in your mouth, use your front teeth to squeeze out the beans, and throw away the pod - it’s not meant to be eaten. Enjoy the spicy sauce as you go!
Serving Suggestions
Spicy edamame is best served warm, straight from the pan. It's a perfect appetizer or snack.
Pair it with your favorite Asian-inspired dishes like spicy ramen, yaki udon, or yakitori, or enjoy it alongside grilled meats or rice bowls.
It's also great as a party snack or game-day finger food. Just set out a bowl and watch it disappear!
Storage & Leftovers
Leftover spicy edamame can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The flavors get even better as it sits!
To reheat, microwave the edamame with a small splash of water in short bursts until warmed through, or reheat it in a skillet or fry pan with a touch of oil, 2 to 3 minutes.
To freeze, cool, then store it in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat as needed.
That's it, my friends. I hope you enjoy this spicy garlic edamame recipe. Let me know if you make it. I'd love to hear how it turned out for you, and if you decided to spice it up!
