This is my favorite honey glazed ham recipe, with spiral ham baked and glazed with a delicious blend of hot honey, brown sugar, and spices, so easy to make!
Hot Honey Glazed Ham Recipe
We're cooking up a delicious Honey Baked Ham in the Chili Pepper Madness kitchen today, my friends! It's a really big ham, so come on over!
We love making ham throughout the year. Typically I'll make a holiday ham, though I like to do it just a bit different than how we grew up. Many people make a simple honey glazed ham with brown sugar and honey, but my recipe gives it a spicy spin by incorporating my homemade hot honey into the mix.
Hot honey is essentially honey that's been infused with spicy chilies and other seasonings. It brings a wonderful flavor to the ham that I think you will love.
Change it this year the next time you make another baked ham. You'll thank me for this one!
Let's talk about how to make hot honey glazed ham, shall we?
Hot Honey Glazed Ham Ingredients
- FOR THE HAM
- Fully Cooked Bone-In Spiral Ham. About 8-10 pounds bone-in ham. You can use a non-spiral cut ham for this as well. This recipe does work with boneless ham.
- Chicken Stock. 1 cup to keep the ham moist during baking. You can use water as well.
- HOT HONEY GLAZE
- Hot Honey. Use 1 cup.
- Butter. 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons).
- Brown Sugar. 1/2 cup.
- Mustard. 2 tablespoons. I prefer hot mustard or Creole mustard, though you can use your favorite.
- Garlic Powder. 1 tablespoon.
- Salt and Black Pepper. To your personal taste.
How to Make Hot Honey Glazed Ham - the Recipe Method
Bake the Ham. First, preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Place the ham into a lightly oiled roasting pan, cut side down.
Bake the ham for 90 minutes, uncovered.
Make the Hot Honey Glaze. While the ham is baking, make the hot honey glaze. Add the honey, butter, brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, and salt and pepper to a small pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Glaze the Baked Ham. After 90 minutes, brush the ham with half of the glaze. Add 1 cup chicken stock or water to the bottom of the baking pan (keeps the ham moist).
Continue to bake another 30 minutes, adding a bit more glaze a few times during the final cooking, until the internal temperature of the ham measures 140 degrees F when measured with a meat thermometer.
Serve the Baked Ham. Remove the ham and cool it slightly. Carve and finish with any remaining glaze just before serving.
Boom! Done! Your hot honey glazed ham is ready to serve. Easy enough to make, isn't it? This is great for any holiday meal, or for your next big party! Enjoy!
Recipe Tips & Notes
- Cooking times can vary, depending on the size of your ham. In general, ham should bake for 15-20 minutes per pound at 325 degrees F.
- You can make this recipe with boneless ham as well. Follow the recipe exactly as-is, but be sure to cook to an internal temperature of 140 degrees F internally.
- Consider smoking the ham at the same temperature as the recipe calls for. You will love the flavorful addition of the wood smoke.
- Wondering how much ham to buy for your group? When buying a ham, consider you'll need to serve 1/3-1/2 pound per person for bone-in ham, and 1/4-1/3 pound of ham per person for boneless ham.

Storage
Hot honey glazed ham will last up to 5 days in the refrigerator in a sealed container. You can easily warm slices in a pan on the stovetop or in the microwave to enjoy again. They're perfect leftovers!
You can also freeze it for 6 months. I like to separate it into small batches so we can thaw and use in many different recipes.

I'm planning to smoke a cooked ham; a couple hours of low temp smoke. Do you have any thoughts on the combination of smoking and hot honey glaze? Of course I will share my results if it comes out well.
Mike Hultquist says
Mark, you can glaze iduring the smoking process if you don't mind opening up the smoker, though I recommend waiting closer to the end, 30-45 minutes tops, so you don't burn the sugars from the honey. Definitely save some for at the end, though, for serving. Let me know how it goes for you.

Hello Mike & Patty,
As you are both probably well aware, English speaking countries all over the world have completely different names for the same thing.
I have never heard of ‘spiral cut ham’, although from the pictures I realise why it is so called. I’m not sure if we have that particular cut in the u.k. or if we simply call it something else. Over here, ham is usually referred to by the type of brine used, or the area that that brine or cure came from. I.e. Bradenham ham, York ham, or Wiltshire Cure.
I would dearly love to cook this for my mother when we are away for New Year as she adores ham. Which leg, I.e. front or back and which part of the leg does spiral ham come from?
If all else fails I’ll use whatever cut I can get, but that brings me to the question of rind/fat. Do I remove either, both or neither?
Paul
Mike Hultquist says
Hey, Paul. Ham in the U.S. typically is cut from the back leg and thigh area, then simply "spiralized" (basically spirally sliced). They're usually already cooked, and only need warming to temp. Ham with a wet cure will likely be what you need, I believe. Let me know.
