This creamy homemade blue cheese dressing is loaded with blue cheese and easy to make, perfect for salads, wraps, veggies, and chicken wings!
Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe
Here it is, my friends! This is my favorite homemade blue cheese dressing recipe. I've received a number of emails asking for it, as I recommend serving it with my various Buffalo Sauce recipes.
I've emailed this to enough people to make me realize I just need to include it here in my growing recipe collection. It isn't spicy, but it greatly complements spicy food by offering a cooling effect, but also a wonderful flavor boost.
Mine is a simple recipe that uses only 5 ingredients, along with a bit of salt and pepper. It's super rich and creamy and loaded with blue cheese crumbles, though I do include ways you can change it up and make it your own.
This is a super versatile condiment, perfect for wings and fried foods, but also for drizzling over steaks, as a salad dressing, or as a simple dip for veggies.
I hope you love it as much as I do! It's so much better than any store bought sauce.
Let's talk about how to make blue cheese dressing, shall we?
Blue Cheese Dressing Ingredients
The recipe measurements are listed in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Crumbled Blue Cheese. Gorgonzola is a good substitute for milder flavor.
- Sour Cream. Or use Mexican crema, which I love.
- Mayonnaise. I love Duke's mayo, but use your favorite.
- Buttermilk. You can use whole milk instead.
- Lemon Juice. Or use white wine vinegar.
- Salt and Black Pepper. To taste.
How to Make Blue Cheese Dressing - the Recipe Method
- Mash the blue cheese crumbles in a small bowl.
- Add the remaining ingredients and stir until creamy and well combined.
- Taste and adjust for seasonings.
- Thin with a bit of extra milk, buttermilk, or water if desired.
Boom! Done! Your easy blue cheese dip is ready to serve. Easy to make, isn't it? You're going to want this for your next session of chicken wings! Yes!
Recipe Tips & Notes
- Buttermilk lends a tangy flavor and a creamy consistency to blue cheese dressing, and also complements the pungent flavor of blue cheese. However, you can use whole milk or heavy cream if desired. If you do, add a bit more lemon juice or vinegar.
- Feel free to add other ingredients to make it your own. Garlic powder is a great addition, as are fresh herbs, green onion, or other spices. Worcestershire sauce is a popular addition, or try a splash or two of your favorite hot sauce.
- For a thinner blue cheese dressing, stir in a bit more buttermilk or whole milk. For a thicker dressing, mash in more blue cheese until you achieve the consistency you prefer.
Serving Blue Cheese Dressing
I love serving blue cheese dressing with buffalo wings, but really anything with buffalo sauce, like my buffalo chicken sandwich, buffalo cauliflower, or buffalo chicken dip.
Serve it as your blue cheese dip recipe with a simple side of vegetables, like carrots or celery, or with chips. It's great spooned over a wedge salad or other greens.
It's also the perfect blue cheese sauce for all of your favorite steak recipes, like my prime rib recipe, or grilled London broil.
Storage
Homemade blue cheese dressing will last 1 week in the refrigerator in a sealed container. You can also freeze it for 3 months in freezer bags or containers.
That's it, my friends. I hope you enjoy my blue cheese dressing recipe. Let me know if you make it and what you served it with. I'd love to hear how it turned out for you!

Help! I made this recipe the other day. I doubled the recipe as my container was 5 oz of blue cheese crumbles. Husband raved how good and thick it was. 3 days later we went to use the dressing on our salads, it was liquid. What went wrong?
Mike Hultquist says
Janice, you can really just stir it back up to reconstitute it. If needed, you can add in a bit more mayo to thicken it up. I hope this helps!

Hey Mike, I sure do recall asking you for that recipe when I made your Buffalo Cauliflower dish! But the one you gave wasn't as fully detailed nor as intriguing as this one! The flavors are downright fantastic, and it paired real nice with some buffalo wings! This recipe's a keeper, no doubt about it! Thank you Sir!
