This BBQ chicken wings recipe is the best with plump, spice rubbed chicken wings fired up on the grill then tossed with homemade honey-bourbon bbq sauce.
BBQ Chicken Wings Recipe
It's grilling season, my friends, and you know what that means? BBQ Chicken Wings! Yes! I love chicken wings on the barbecue grill.
As much as I love deep fried hot wings, there is something special about grilled chicken wings that makes me extra happy. Season them up, toss them on, hang out in the great weather.
You can easily toss them with your favorite wing sauce, but I like to use my very own Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce recipe. A good barbecue sauce will take just about any of your grilled foods to the next level. Secret's in the sauce!
This recipe is called BBQ Chicken Wings with Honey-Bourbon BBQ Sauce, and I think you're going to love it.
Let's talk about how to make bbq chicken wings, shall we?
BBQ Chicken Wings Ingredients
FOR THE BBQ SAUCE
- 1 cup tomato sauce (use ketchup for a sweeter version)
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup bourbon (try it with tequila or rum instead, or use broth for a non-alcoholic version)
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon cayenne
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 2 tablespoons honey (maple syrup is a nice substitution)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (use less or omit for less sweet)
- 2 tablespoons hot sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
FOR THE CHICKEN WINGS
- 3 pounds chicken wings separated, wing tips removed
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasonings
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (use cayenne pepper for even hotter)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
How to Make BBQ Chicken Wings - the Recipe Method
Make the Honey-Bourbon BBQ Sauce. Whisk all of the bbq sauce ingredients together in a sauce pan. Bring to a quick boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes to let the flavors develop and the sauce to thicken.
You can simmer longer if you'd like. Remove from heat and cool. Set aside until ready to use.
Season the Chicken Wings. Pat the chicken wing skins dry with a paper towel. Add the hot wings to a large bowl and toss them with olive oil, Cajun seasonings, smoked paprika, garlic powder and salt and pepper.
I use my own homemade Cajun seasoning recipe. Toss until they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Grill the BBQ Wings. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Grill the chicken wings for 20 minutes, flipping occasionally, or until they are nicely cooked through.
They should measure 165 degrees F internally.
For Charcoal Grilling.
- Open the bottom vent of your grill. Stack your charcoal briquettes in a pyramid on the bottom grill grate.
- Add lighter fluid (per the product directions) or use a chimney starter. Light the charcoal. Leave the grill uncovered. Burn until the flames die out and the burning charcoal begins to ash over.
- Spread the briquettes in a single layer when they are covered in ash.
- Grill the chicken wings for 20 minutes, turning once halfway through. Keep an eye on them so the skins do not burn. The wings are done when they measure 165 degrees F internally.
Toss with BBQ Sauce. When your bbq wings are done to your liking, toss them with the honey-bourbon bbq sauce. Enjoy!
Boom! Done! BBQ Chicken Wings are ready to enjoy! So good, aren't they? Chicken wings are quite easy to prepare on the grill. They do cook up quite quickly.
And this bbq sauce! So good. It's one of my favorite homemade bbq sauces. I use it all the time.
Recipe Tips & Notes
- Cooking Times for Chicken Wings. Cooking times will vary for different cuts of chicken. Larger cuts may need longer cooking time. It is best to go by temperature. Chicken is done when it measures 165 degrees F internally.
- Honey-Bourbon BBQ Sauce. The sauce yields about 2 cups of bbq sauce. You can make it several days ahead and keep refrigerated. The flavors will develop further the longer they mingle.
That's it, my friends. I hope you enjoy my bbq chicken wings recipe. They're great for an appetizer, party platter, game day get together, or even a quick and easy dinner. Let me know if you make it. I'd love to hear how they turned out for you. Keep it spicy!

I have been a long time subscriber to CPM and this is my first comment on one of your recipes. For the 4th I wanted to make something a little different so I went with the following recipes from CPM. BBQ Chicken Wings with Honey-Bourbon BBQ Sauce, Black Bean Salad, and Creamy Chipotle Sauce for my hamburgers. EVERYTHING was AMAZING and my entire family was more than satisfied with their 4th of July meal. I did not deviate at all from any of the recipes and they were perfect. So THANK YOU Mike from my family and I for you giving us such good developed flavor profiles and being such a big part of my families daily meals adventures.

Awesome to hear, Kevin! I greatly appreciate you sharing this! Very happy you enjoyed the recipes. Cheers!

Great recipe had no apple cider vinegar so used white wine vinegar . This made it to sour so added a tin of apple sauce worked out great

Glad you enjoyed it, Brad!

This post is SO informative, we have both a charcoal grill and a regular one so I love having instructions for both. We are HUGE chicken wing fans, definitely plan on making this a repeat recipe all summer!

Thanks, Stephanie! I appreciate it!!

Not tried yet but looks great and might just need some reaper or ghost pepper flakes ;-).
Might I suggest--NEVER use bbq lighter fluid unless you like the "gasloline-flavoured" aftertaste.
Either a chimney or starter cubes only. No residual taste.
Michael Hultquist - Chili Pepper Madness says
Thanks, Len. I use a chimney starter for myself, much easier, though many use the fluid. It's fine if it's all burned off, but yep, can leave an aftertaste if not done right.

Hard to believe but it's been 4 years and I'm just trying this now. SWMBO does not like spicy stuff so it's difficult to make meals we both enjoy.
Being a spice head, the recipe here would be (actuall, it is) perfect for me BUT as it's for two, I cut the "hot spicy" components in half and the rest remained the same.
It's still spicy for her but I have no issue with the heat level. Even at half, there's still a slight "tongue tickle" 😉
As always, your recipes turn out perfect Mike 😀

Thanks so much, Len! Glad you got to it and enjoyed it! I love to hear it.
